Science & Mechanics cover, May 1967
Forthcoming UFOhangar.com series revisits period UFO and other news for insight into one of the most iconic cultural phenomena of modern civilization.
The first article in a series looking back at older news and magazine articles begins with incidents in Wanaque, NJ, as reported in Science & Mechanics of May 1967. Starting with actual print copies of the items, which include the often very interesting context of period advertising and other editorial matter, the idea is to take a look at the stories with the benefit of cultural and historical hindsight.
Contrasts between past and current ideas about UFOs, interpretations and assumptions regarding them, and the perception of these incidents by witnesses, media, official agencies and the public are highlighted. Also, can these incidents be better or differently understood from a contemporary perspective.
This is not so much an attempt to explain the incidents, but rather to examine the context in which they occurred, to the extent that original media documents and history allow.
The series begins February 25, 2011.
